Otago Boys' 1st XI Hockey Crowned Division One Champions
On Tuesday night, our Boys’ 1st XI capped off an outstanding season by claiming the Division One Shield in what has been a new-look Division One Boys’ competition for 2026.
Thanks to the support of Hymie Gill and Jayden Chika, the team had the unique opportunity to compete not only against other secondary schools but also against two Otago Hockey Association teams. This provided our players with valuable challenges throughout the season and helped raise the standard of competition.
The team performed strongly all season and has remained unbeaten against Otago secondary school opposition since the 2025 final, which was only decided in a shootout. The 2026 squad has consistently demonstrated skill, determination and resilience, and these qualities were on full display in the final. The players showed tremendous composure under pressure, remaining calm and focused when it mattered most.
The team has been superbly supported by an outstanding coaching group of Gussie, Gordy, Hamish and Michael, with additional support at the final from an impromptu visit by Old Boy, New Zealand A player and Otago Under 18 coach Dan Torr.
In the final, our boys proved to be the stronger side, displaying superior skill, execution and teamwork to secure a convincing victory and lift the shield.
Adding to the occasion was the incredible support of the Hoops Army. Armed with drums, chants, singing, hooters and plenty of enthusiasm, they created a fantastic atmosphere that reflected the pride, passion and commitment of our school community.
We are immensely proud of the team’s achievements and the way they represented our school throughout the season. Congratulations to the players, coaches, managers and supporters on an exceptional year and a well-deserved championship victory.
