A classroom like no other
Nestled on the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park in the West Branch of the Matukituki Valley, the OBHS Outdoor Education Lodge has been an integral part of the school's character since 1975. Built entirely through funds raised by our boys and their families, the lodge provides generations of students with unforgettable outdoor learning and leadership experiences.
OBHS students get several opportunities to use this facility during their time here
Year 9 – Hostel Orientation Camp
New hostel boys and senior student leaders spend a long weekend together during the first week of Term 1.
The camp helps students build friendships, settle into boarding life and begin their journey as part of the OBHS brotherhood.
Year 10 – Outdoor Education Camp
Every Year 10 student attends a week-long camp with their curriculum class.
The programme develops resilience, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership while immersed in the outdoors.
Activities may include:
- Tramping
- Overnight camping
- Orienteering
- Fishing
- Kayaking
- Outdoor cooking
- Disconnecting from technology and learning to communicate face-to-face
Year 12 – Leadership Camp
Selected students apply to attend a leadership programme held after NCEA external examinations.
The camp prepares students for leadership roles in their final year at school.
Year 13 – Giving Back
Senior students have the opportunity to return as leaders, supporting Year 10 camps and mentoring younger boys.
Beyond the Classroom
The lodge is also used by:
- The First XV Rugby squad as a pre-season training base.
- OBHS families, who can book bunkrooms at selected times when a Lodge Manager is in residence.
- Old Boys and their families, many of whom return to share the Matukituki experience with the next generation.
Private Hire
The Matukituki Lodge is also available for private hire.
