Hostel Happenings
A sense of both excitement and urgency is upon School House, with just days to go for our senior boys who will be finishing their time with us.
People on farms are busy too, with lambing, calving and tailing all well underway. Labour Weekend was a welcome break, and lots of boys went home to help their parents on the farm or enjoyed one last long weekend with some recreational pursuits. Of course, we hope they are still managing to prioritise time for studying!
Housemaster Update
A warm welcome to our two new Housemasters!
Charlie Anderson says:
“Hi, I’m a fourth-year Law and Finance university student, originally from a dairy farm in Ōtorohanga, up in the Waikato. I’m a former hostel boy myself, having boarded at Hamilton Boys’ High School. I’m excited to be a part of hostel life again, as I now know how valuable those five years were for me.
“I love watching and talking about most sports, especially the NBA. I love competition, so if you think you’re good at table tennis, please let me know!”
Hamish McIntosh says:
“Hi, I’m Hamish, a second-year Theology student at Otago. I grew up in Christchurch and went to Shirley Boys’ High School, where I took up rowing. This led me to continue rowing at university and get involved in coaching, so I’d love to chat about rowing with you.
“Outside of university, I’m actively involved at Knox Church, where I attend most Sunday mornings and enjoy getting involved in the life of the church. Having been through high school and spent time involved in sport and coaching, I know how important it is to have a good community around you. I’m looking forward to getting to know all the boys and helping make the hostel a welcoming place to live.”
We farewell Brook Robson, who has followed his rugby passion and returned to the North Island. We wish him all the best for his future endeavours.
Around School House
The boys had their cross-country last week in near-perfect conditions, with fine weather and little wind.
We are enjoying using our new staffroom space and look forward to the completion of the new sick bay. Blinds have been ordered and should be installed by the end of November.
Men of the Week
Congratulations to last week’s Men of the Week!
Asher Knox shared a very wise quote, stating that “the small things do matter”. This is a profound statement that challenges us all and gives us something to aspire to. Thanks, Asher!
Archie McNab is respectful, resilient and organised. He shines by managing to stay calm and tolerant of others at School House.
This week’s Men of the Week are:
Oscar Brereton – For a great week at school and in the hostel. Your cooperative and polite demeanour is commendable. Keep it up, Oscar!
Hunter Winmill – For his friendly, inclusive manner. We appreciate your positive vibe and how you always make time for others.
Important Health Notice
Unfortunately, we have recently had a case of school sores and a suspected case of scabies at School House. These can sometimes appear as infected, itchy bites on the legs, arms or hands.
If your son has any suspicious red lumps, please notify us immediately so that we can ensure they are checked and treated as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.
Upcoming Events
We look forward to celebrating our senior boys at our annual Skippers’ Feast on Wednesday, 4 November, from 5 pm at School House, and at Senior Prizegiving on Thursday, 5 November, from 7 pm at the Regent Theatre.
We welcome any feedback or questions. Please feel free to contact us.
