Junior OMAthlon
The high point in Dunedin's academic calendar rolled around last Thursday with the Junior OMAthlon.
Mathematicians from all over Otago sharpened their pencils and turned their calculators off to test their mettle in the beautiful blend of sport and academics that is the OMAthlon.
This year, Otago Boys had four Year 10 teams and four Year 9 teams, with a range of students from across our junior school. This is our largest team for quite a few years. The 31 young men conducted themselves exceptionally well, as usual, but unfortunately, this was not our year.
Our top-finishing Year 9 team came equal seventh with 27 points, eight points behind third place.
This team consisted of:
Dev Kandath, Anderson Scott, Zian Kruger and Carson Sun.
The other three teams had a great deal of fun, although they found the mathematics very challenging.
They were:
William Duffy, Bailey Findlay, Omri Kent and Ryder McCallum
Eli Marshall, Michael Nguyen, Makai Whanga and Morri Wright
Matthew Lindsell, Thomas Lorenz, Sandalu Ranawaka and Cooper Smith
Year 10 was a very challenging competition, with the top team scoring only 31 out of a possible 60. Our top-finishing team placed fifth with 22 points, just one question behind third place.
This team consisted of:
Michael Beins, Bennett Potter, Joseph Scanlan and Isaac Stewart.
The other three teams, who all performed very well, were:
Ryan She, Yatin Gounder and Lucas Lyu
Nate Crawford, Ollie Nicolaou, Amitai Rosman and Matt Storer
Connor Horne, Fergus Lloyd, Tāmati Matthews and Jack Orlovich
A big congratulations to all the boys for coming out and giving it a go. It is a lot of fun and a real high point in my calendar.
