Outdoor Maths
The 10T class has been applying their trigonometry skills to a practical situation today – calculating the height of the bell tower.
Making the most of a beautiful, almost-spring day, they took measurements using a tape measure, clinometer, and metre rule. Returning to the classroom, they were able to calculate the height.
Answers ranged from 18.4 metres to 25.9 metres, which shows we still have a bit of work to do before we start contracting ourselves out as a professional engineering team. On the positive side, we have learned a lot about the accuracy of measurements, sensible rounding of answers, and how our trigonometry skills can be useful in the real world.
