Important Update: Changes to Mid-Year Progress Reports for Junior Students
On Friday 3rd July, you will receive your child's mid-year report.
For parents of our Year 9 and 10 students, you will notice that this end-of-term report includes new reporting pages. These pages look quite different from previous years because schools across New Zealand are currently transitioning to the refreshed curriculum, The New Zealand Curriculum | Te Mātaiaho.
Plenty of useful information is available through the parent portal on the Ministry of Education website. The information specifically on reporting is found here.
The report will include the usual pages with progress data for each subject, assessment results, and attendance data, but it will also specifically reflect your son's progress against the updated ‘strands’ in the new Mathematics and English curriculums.
Understanding the New Progress Descriptors
A big shift in The New Zealand Curriculum | Te Mātaiaho is how student progress is described. Learning is now organised into broader phases, with students in Years 9 and 10 learning within Phase 4 of the curriculum. At this stage, only Mathematics and English are required to be taught under this phase, with other Year 9 and 10 subjects coming online with the new curriculum next year.
To measure achievement within these phases, we are now using the following progress indicators:
Emerging
Developing
Consolidating
Proficient
Exceeding
The refreshed curriculum introduces higher benchmarks. Because of these updated, slightly higher expectations, you may find that the level your son is currently sitting at looks a bit different compared to his primary or intermediate school reports. Please be reassured: this does not mean your child has suddenly stopped making progress. It simply means they are being measured against a new, more rigorous standard.
What to Look For in the Report
The ultimate goal is for students to aim for Proficient or Exceeding by the end of the year to fully meet the curriculum levels expected for their year group.
Because this is a mid-year check-in, you will notice there will be no grade marked against Mathematics standards that have not yet been covered in class this year.
When reading your son's report, we highly encourage you to focus on the teacher's comments detailing his progress and next learning steps. These are the most valuable tools for showing where he needs to head next.
