Strengthening Bonds: Balmacewen Buddy Reading Programme 2026
A long-standing partnership has found a new, inspiring chapter.
This term marks the official launch of the Balamcewan Buddy Reading Programme with Balamc, revitalizing a connection between our schools that dates back to the early 2000s when Mr. Swan first established our association.
The format of the programme is simple but incredibly effective: each week, the boys sit down to read with a small group of mixed-ability students, followed by some well-earned, energetic play in the gym.
While it is easy to see the immediate fun the students are having, the Balamcewan Buddy Reading Programme's core purposes is to:
Foster Literacy and Confidence: Reading to a peer or older "buddy" provides a low-stakes, supportive environment. For the mixed-ability students, it builds reading fluency, while the boys develop patience, leadership, and mentoring skills.
Build Genuine Community Connection: Honoring a relationship that spans over two decades, this programme bridges the gap between our schools, turning a historical association into a living, breathing friendship.
Promote Joy in Learning: By pairing academic growth with physical play, the programme ensures that students associate reading with positive experiences, community spirit, and fun.
See the legacy that Mr. Swan started in the early 2000s continue is a testament to the enduring bond between our schools. It's more than just reading; it’s about connection.
We look forward to watching these buddies grow together, both in their literacy journeys and their friendships, as the programme continues throughout the year. Specials thanks to our wonderful new librarian, Mrs Schaumann for working with our Year 13 students to equip them with some skills to help the Year 8's with their reading.
