NCEA Changes
NCEA is being replaced by a new, subject-based senior secondary qualification system with two levels over Year 12 and Year 13.
Students will need to pass three subjects, and a new Foundational award that accredits literacy and numeracy to be awarded the new qualifications.
The new qualifications will be phased in from 2028, beginning at Year 11 with the introduction of the Foundational Award. The transition between NCEA and the new qualifications will be carefully managed.
There is information on the Ministry of Education’s website, and as further details are confirmed (e.g., assessments for specific subjects) this will be shared with schools and other stakeholders.
The new system will be internationally comparable and ensure that students receive credible, consistent and easy to understand results.
A review of University Entrance will begin once the qualification design has been confirmed.
Impact on international students
NZQA will be working with international partners on the recognition of the new qualifications within other jurisdictions for tertiary study. They will also continue to maintain recognition for NCEA.
The new qualifications will be internationally recognised, and the design is likely to make international comparability more straightforward.
There will still be school students working towards NCEA until the end of 2029.
NCEA is still widely recognised internationally and can be a rigorous credential for students.
