The importance of attendance

A key pillar of success at Otago Boys' High School.

As we navigate through another academic year, it is essential to emphasise the cornerstone of success in any educational journey: attendance.

At Otago Boys' High School, we use the phrase “being in the room.” We all want the boys to achieve their potential in their academic, cultural, and sporting endeavours, but central to this mission is regular attendance.

Regular attendance is directly linked to academic success. Each day in class offers valuable learning experiences, whether it's engaging in discussions, participating in group activities, or receiving direct instruction from our dedicated teachers. Missing classes means missing out on these opportunities, which can hinder a student's understanding of key concepts and their overall academic performance.

Consistent attendance instils discipline and responsibility in students, qualities that are invaluable not only during their time at Otago Boys' High School but also in their future endeavours. By prioritising attendance, students develop the habit of showing up on time, being prepared, and fully engaging in their studies - a practice that will serve them well throughout their lives.

School is not just about academics; it is also a place where students form friendships, build connections, and develop important social skills. Regular attendance allows students to actively participate in school activities, clubs, and events, fostering a sense of belonging within the school community. These interactions contribute to a positive school culture and create lasting memories that enrich the high school experience.

The school offers a diverse range of opportunities beyond the classroom, including extracurricular activities, sports, and special events. Attending school regularly ensures that students can take full advantage of these opportunities, whether it's joining a sports team, participating in a drama production, or attending a guest speaker event. These experiences not only enhance personal growth but also broaden students' horizons and enrich their overall educational journey.

As members of the Otago Boys' High School community, it is incumbent upon all of us - students, parents, teachers, and staff to prioritise attendance and recognise its significance in shaping the educational experience. By working together to promote regular attendance, we can empower our students to achieve their full potential and lay the foundation for lifelong success.

So please try to ensure all non-essential appointments are made outside of school hours. If you have concerns about your sons' attendance please contact their Dean.

With the latest set of indicator reports due out today please take note of your son’s attendance. As a guide, a student who is at 85% attendance will miss over half a term's worth of school. This is sure to negatively impact their success.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school community.
