Young Talent on the Big Stage

On the 7th of May, Boudewijn Keenan had the wonderful experience of performing at the Dunedin Town Hall as a featured soloist, performing with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

Boudewijn was awarded third place and $1500 after his performance in the final of the inaugural Dunedin Concerto Competition. This was a significant accomplishment, as the competition is open to performers up to the age of 23, so most of the competitors were University students.

Boudewijn played Camille Saint-Saens' Cello Concerto No. 1. In the preliminary round, Boudewijn played with a piano accompanist. Playing with a symphony orchestra is quite a different experience, and one that sounded amazing.

Otago Boys' old boy Abhinath Berry was also one of the finalists, placing second, and OGHS Head Girl of 2019, Rose Stevenson took the top prize. It was a night of impressive musicianship, including performances from the Dunedin Youth Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra.

As a 17 year old, Boudewijn is eligible to compete in the biennial competition two more times. We look forward to following his career and future successes.
