Otago Boys High School is one of the oldest and most well-established boarding schools in New Zealand. Boarders have lived at the school and have been educated with us since 1871.

Boarding at Otago Boys’ High School is more than just accommodation – it’s an experience that shapes confident, capable young men. Since 1871, Otago Boys’ School House has provided a home away from home for generations of boarders. Today, around 140 boys from across Otago, Southland, South Canterbury, the North Island, and overseas call our hostel home. Together they create a vibrant, diverse community that forms the heart of school life.
Our philosophy centres on creating a safe, structured, and respectful environment where boys can thrive. The hostel offers a balance of independence and guidance, helping students manage academic study alongside sport, recreation, and social life. Supervised prep sessions, clear expectations, and ongoing pastoral care ensure every boy is supported to achieve his best.

Families can be confident that their sons are cared for by a dedicated boarding team led by the Director of Boarding and Matron, supported by housemasters and senior boarders who mentor younger students. Regular communication keeps families informed and involved in each boy’s progress and wellbeing.

From early-morning training to late-night conversations in the dorms, hostel life is filled with the moments that define a young man’s journey. With shared traditions, leadership opportunities, and a culture of respect and camaraderie, School House provides not just accommodation, but a foundation for lifelong confidence, friendships, and values that endure well beyond the school gates.
