WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL HOUSE

This guide is intended to help boys and their families to become part of the hostel family as easily as possible. It will not cover all aspects of Hostel life, but will help with the transition. Remember that the staff and other boys will help the new entrants settle into School House quickly. If in doubt please ask for help.

A downloadable link giving information about the hostel can be found at: OBHS_School_House_Brochure_08.pdf

Staff

Many staff are involved in the running of the Hostel during the year.

Manager - Mr McGarry
Matron - Mrs Leen
Senior House Master - Mr Alan Hoffman

The kitchen, laundry, maintenance and cleaning staff are all part of the team involved in creating the best possible environment for the boys living away from home. All hostel staff are to be treated in a polite manner by all boys at all times and the boys can expect the same treatment back.

Health and Welfare

Matron is responsible for treating and monitoring the health of the boys in the Hostel. All medical treatment must be carried out with the knowledge of Matron, who will notify parents in the event of hospital treatment being necessary, and on other appropriate occasions.
The van is available to transport boys when necessary to the Mornington or Maori Hill Medical Centres. Physiotherapy is available through Physiomed at Moana Pool.
A full range of vaccinations are available at the start of the year. Parents are notified fully of the range of options. Prescription expenses must be paid for by the boys.

Many students have cell phones to make communication to and from parents easy and more private. Another option you may choose is the 0800 number. This means boys can ring from the hostel and it is charged to your phone account at home.

Hostel Council

This is made up of two students from each year group as well as the Head Prefect. It meets regularly to discuss matters raised by the boys. Minutes are kept and the Manager is involved at each meeting.

Activities

The Hostel is proud of the level of participation of boarders in school activities, especially sport. Hostel boys are represented in almost all codes at school, and in some sports at provincial and even national level. Access to first class facilities, competition, and coaching has opened the door for many talented and determined Hostel sportsmen.

Sport occupies much of the free time available to boys in the Hostel, however we are anxious to encourage boys to widen their horizons into activities and facilities that may not be available to them at home. These facilities include:

Swimming with Moana Pool Swim and Gym, Squash, Rowing, Trapshooting, Water Polo, Touch, Golf, Tennis Coaching, Sailing, Ice Hockey and Skating, Ten Pin Bowling, Small bore Rifle Shooting, Archery and others.

The social activities include:

School dances with Otago Girls, Columba and St Hilda's, Hostel Picnics and Barbeques.

Leave Provisions

The health and safety of your son is paramount to the Management of the Hostel. Whenever a student leaves the Hostel, apart from timetabled school commitments, a record must be kept of his whereabouts and in most cases permission given by the Duty Master, Matron or the Manager.

The main types of leave are as follows:

  • School - no permission required
  • Tennis courts - permission needed (record on daily leave sheet)
    Roberts Park
  • Roslyn - permission needed record on daily leave sheet
    Moana Pool
    Columba College

It is vital that students report to Master's Study when they are departing and returning from weekend leave.

Hostel Parents' Committee

All parents are welcome to be part of this Committee. Ken Bain is the current chairperson and the parents' representative is Bronwyn Woodhead. Membership is entirely informal and on a meeting by meeting basis. The meetings are held to coincide with Parent – Teacher interviews and the end of terms 1, 2 and 3. Minutes are kept and included in the Hostel Report to the Board of Trustees.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

These are organised for the end of terms 1, 2 and 3. Meeting times for interviews can be organised and sent to parents prior to the end of term.

Mitchell Cup

There is the House system at School House. The four Houses are: Nicholson, Campbell, Thomson and Hawthorne. There are students of all ages in each House. There are a number of House events held during the year and prep effort and attendance also earn points towards the House Cup. Family members will enter into the same House.

Pocket Money

All year 9 boys must be part of the pocket money system, however it is optional for boys at other levels.
Parents are to deposit $200.00 in an account to be held by the hostel. From this will be deducted
Weekly pocket money ($10 per week)

School House Clothing List

The following is the list of items that your son will need to bring with him upon entry to the hostel. We would advise you not to bring too many items of clothing as they don't have an enormous amount of room to store everything.

Please could you also ensure that all of the items are clearly labeled? This is essential with 120 boys' clothes being washed daily. There is a Mark-it clothing label contact sheet in your orientation pack. With the name you put on the label – they suggest first initials and surname.
