AthleticsThe school track and field championships take place in February each year and many students go on to compete in Otago/Southland, South Island and NZ Championships. Otago Boys’ has reached national prominence with performances at recent nationals and become a dominant force at Secondary School level. Athletics coaching is available during sports period and after school during the season. Recently a number of our students have gone on to represent New Zealand at International events in a variety of track and field events.
BadmintonA popular winter sport with practices in the gym on Tuesday with 4 teams competing on Wednesday after school. The “A” team competes in interschool programmes. Professional coaching is available through Jim Hoffman, our school sports co-ordinator and present Otago Coach.
BasketballOBHS has dominated recent city competitions (undefeated for 4 years) and are the South Island Champions finishing 6th in NZ. We have 15 teams this year, including 3 in year 9 all with experienced coaches. Junior teams compete at age grade tournaments throughout the South Island and our Senior teams have been regular qualifiers to Nationals . Murray Clarke (Nuggets, Saints, and Giants NBL) has joined the staff and coaching ranks along with Gavin Briggs (Ass Coach Otago Nuggets), Brent Matehaere and other staff coaching the teams. Boys are able and encouraged to play other sports.
Association FootballThe school has 6 teams competing in Wednesday and Saturday competitions, One Premier Youth team and two Youth Open Grade teams. We have three teams competing in the Wednesday league—our 1st XI and Premier Year 10 & 11 and our Year 9 team. Emphasis is placed on skill development. The 1st XI play 5 interschools against traditional rivals and regularly compete in NZ tournaments. The Football academy is open to Yr 9 and 10 students with 2 hours tuition each week with Michael McGarry.
Cross-CountryThe school junior and senior teams had a very successful year this year with a mixture of talent, determination, and team work. All year 9 - 11 students compete annually in the school cross-country around the school circuit. Both junior and senior cross-country teams compete in all regional events along with interschools with King’s, Timaru Boys’ and Christchurch Boys’ High Schools.
Mountain BikingMountain biking has become popular at OBHS with about 10 students in the school club. Once a week, students are transported to a suitable venue for practice and coaching. The school enters teams in various competitions in both Downhill and Cross Country MTB, the major event being the South Island Secondary Schools MTB championships in September.
Swimming & DivingThe school has its own heated swimming pool plus easy access to the Moana Pool facilities. Over the years we have had outstanding swimmers, Peter McMillan, Matt Glassford, Ryan Johnson, Shayne Patience and Adam Simpson.
Canoe PoloA team competes in the social grade this year and we plan to have a team in the competitive grades each year. We have players playing at A & B grade level. But no school team at A grade.
Ice HockeyOBHS has a team in each division of the Secondary Schools competition and is looking forward to a promising season including an interschool against King’s. This should include our top team competing in the South Island Secondary Schools Competition later on this year. Otago Boys’ also offers Curling as a sport and recreation option.
FivesThis is one of the old established sports of the school. These days a tennis ball and a few friends are all you need. An annual tournament takes place with singles and doubles championship trophies at stake.
GolfJuniors are introduced to golf through the Novice Golf Coaching programme. Current activities include professional coaching for all interested, golf camps, and a large number of competitions targeting all ages and abilities.
HockeyHockey is continuing to expand at OBHS. The venue for all games and practices is the McMillan Turf with competition games currently played on Tuesday evening. Many of our players are also Otago Representatives and compete in interprovincial competitions.
RowingRowing, is a High Profile Olympic Sport targeted by Sparc as likely to provide medals at the forthcoming Olympics in 2008. OBHS has been competitive in the province for over fifty years. Currently, the club have their own clubrooms and a fleet of boats comprising Eights, Fours, Pairs, Sculling Doubles and Singles. The school regularly competes at local regattas, provincial regattas on Lake Ruataniwha and the North Island course on Lake Karapiro. This year our crews travelled to the Maadi regatta and performed with credit.
RugbyThe school has one of the largest and oldest rugby clubs in New Zealand. In 1871 a school team played a University team which marked the first school game of rugby in the Province. Over recent years eleven sides have played each season with the 1st XV playing in the Highlanders 1st XV competition. Other teams are the 2nd XV, Colts, U16 Blues, U15 Blues, U15 Whites, U15 Golds, U14 Blues, U14 Whites, U14 Golds and an Under 13 Blue team. As well as the local competition games, the 1st and 2nd Fifteens play Interschool fixtures against Christchurch BHS, Christ’s College, Southland BHS and King’s HS; with the 1st XV also playing both Waitaki BHS and Timaru BHS. Each season the School provides a large number of representative players in the age grade Otago teams and recent old boys Richie McCaw, Byron Kelleher, Filipo Levi and Jason Kawau are further testimony to the good grounding the players receive and the heights they can reach. Above everything they all enjoyed their Rugby at OB’s.
Water PoloOtago Boys’ plays in the secondary school competition at Moana Pool during the first and fourth terms. The benefit of having our own swimming pool for training has assisted with individual skills and team preparation.
TrapshootingPractices Wednesdays at Waldronville and competes in numerous shoots and interschools. Approximately 20 boys take part from Year 9 to Year 13.
SailingThe school operates four Sunburst yachts out of the Ravensbourne Boating Club. Some of the yachts are stored in the clubhouse, and some in two shipping containers. Three of the yachts are fiberglass and false floored and one a wooden side tank model. They are sponsored by the Lion Foundation, Cock & Bull, Works Infrastructure, MWH, and Macleod & Associates.
Snowboarding/SkiingBoth competitive and recreational skiing and snowboarding are available to students at OBHS.
SquashThree levels of Squash are offered at OB’s. Social Squash is provided through the local clubs and schools beginners competition on Friday nights. Interschools are played against most of our traditional rivals during the winter season and a number of school based teams compete in men’s interclubs through the Otago Squash Rackets Club.
TennisSchool teams compete in a variety of grades on Saturday mornings and afternoons and Wednesday after school. Coaching takes place during sports period on Tuesday at the school courts on Stuart Street. The tennis club has been very successful over recent years with the emphasis on youth development.
TriathlonThis sport is excellent for the student who wants an individual challenge in more than one activity. There are many events on the school calendar to test students of all ages.
VolleyballBoth social and competitive volleyball is available at the school. As well as the local schools’ competition, there is the opportunity to compete in a number of metropolitan and regional tournaments.
Rock ClimbingOBHS now have a professionally built boulder wall to complement our summer rock climbing club.
Theatre SportsThe school has both a senior and a junior playing squad. There are interschool fixtures with Christ’s College, Christchurch Boys’ HS, King’s HS and Timaru Boys’ HS. The talent pool is steadily growing and some very clever boys play improvised theatre games. It’s not easy to make it up on the spot and to be funny as well.
CricketCricket opportunities at OBHS include Saturday competitions for all age groups, inter-schools for 1st, 2nd and Colts’ teams, and tournaments for Year 9 and Year 10 players.
