The Right Education Makes The Heart As Strong As Oak

Sporting Opportunities

AFL

AFL (Australian Rules football) is played outside the winter sports seasons.  The senior team competed in the NZ under 20’s competition in Auckland in March 2011. They play locally against the University team and an Old Boys’ team.   The junior team competed in the Hawks Cup in October to qualify to play off for the South Island Champs which they won in Christchurch, 3 junior players were selected to represent the New Zealand under 16 team and travelled to Tonga to play in for the Oceania Cup.

Athletics

The school track and field championships take place in February each year and many students go on to compete in Otago/Southland, South Island and NZ Championships. Otago Boys’ has reached national prominence with top performances at the recent nationals and has become a dominant force at Secondary School level. Athletics coaching is available during sports period and after school during the season. Recently a number of our students have gone on to represent New Zealand at International events in a variety of track and field events.

Badminton

A popular winter sport with practices in the gym on Tuesday with 4 teams competing on Wednesday after school. The “A” team competes in interschool programmes. Professional coaching is available through Jim Hoffman, our school sports co-ordinator and present Otago Coach.

Basketball

OBHS has dominated recent city competitions (undefeated for 4 years). We have 15 teams this year, including 3 in year 9 all with experienced coaches. Junior teams compete at age grade tournaments throughout the South Island and our Senior teams have been regular qualifiers to Nationals .  Brent Matehaere and other staff coach the teams. Boys are able and encouraged to play other sports.

Association Football

The school has 6 teams competing in Wednesday and Saturday competitions, One Premier Youth team and two Youth Open Grade teams. We have three teams competing in the Wednesday league—our 1st XI and Premier Year 10 & 11 and our Year 9 team. Emphasis is placed on skill development. The 1st XI play 5 interschools against traditional rivals and regularly compete in NZ tournaments. The Football academy is open to Yr 9 and 10 students with 2 hours tuition each week with Michael McGarry.

Cross-Country

The school junior and senior teams had a very successful year this year with a mixture of talent, determination, and team work. All year 9 - 11 students compete annually in the school cross-country around the school circuit. Both junior and senior cross-country teams compete in all regional events along with interschools with King’s, Timaru Boys’ and Christchurch Boys’ High Schools.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking has become popular at OBHS with about 10 students in the school club. Once a week, students are transported to a suitable venue for practice and coaching. The school enters teams in various competitions in both Downhill and Cross Country MTB, the major event being the South Island Secondary Schools MTB championships in September.

Swimming & Diving

The school has its own heated swimming pool plus easy access to the Moana Pool facilities. Over the years we have had outstanding swimmers, Peter McMillan, Matt Glassford, Ryan Johnson, Shayne Patience and Adam Simpson.

Canoe Polo

A team competes in the social grade this year and we plan to have a team in the competitive grades each year. We have players playing at A & B grade level. But no school team at A grade.

Cycling

A new addition to the schools sporting agenda. This group have a weekly ride with coaches Chris Drake and Susy Pryde. Individuals compete in Cycling Otago events at weekends while the school team competes in both local and national schools events. The emphasis is on safe techniques, team riding, fitness and enjoyment.

Ice Hockey

OBHS has a team in each division of the Secondary Schools competition and is looking forward to a promising season including an interschool against King’s. This should include our top team competing in the South Island Secondary Schools Competition later on this year. Otago Boys’ also offers Curling as a sport and recreation option.

Fives

This is one of the old established sports of the school. These days a tennis ball and a few friends are all you need. An annual tournament takes place with singles and doubles championship trophies at stake.

Golf

Juniors are introduced to golf through the Novice Golf Coaching programme. Current activities include professional coaching for all interested, golf camps, and a large number of competitions targeting all ages and abilities.
Senior golf teams at OBHS have a proud record at national and international levels being NZ champions twice, and second in the World Championships in 1994. Professionals Mahal Pearce and Ben Gallie are both former students at OBHS.

Hockey

Hockey is continuing to expand at OBHS. The venue for all games and practices is the McMillan Turf with competition games currently played on Tuesday evening. Many of our players are also Otago Representatives and compete in interprovincial competitions.
In addition our 1st XI competes in interschools and in the top national tournament, the Rankin Cup.

Rowing

Rowing, started at O.B.H.S in 1953 and the school has been very competitive in intervening fifty-nine years. Currently, the club have their own clubrooms and a fleet of boats comprising Eights, Fours, Pairs, Sculling Doubles and Singles. The school regularly competes at local regattas, provincial regattas on Lake Ruataniwha and the North Island course on Lake Karapiro. Our crews travel to the Maadi Cup regatta and perform with credit.
We train and row on the harbour, the Taieri River or Lake Waihola. Two training camps, at Alexandra and Twizel are held annually.
The summer rowing season starts in September and concludes in March/April depending on Easter or at the Maadi Regatta in April. A winter programme is available for those wishing to improve their fitness levels. Indoor rowing championships are held in September.
School House is the home for most rowers. Town boys are welcome to join the club.  Head coach is Fred Strachan.
If you want a Pathway to the Olympics, row at OBHS, as is shown by the succes of two recent old boys who are currently in the squad training for the London Olympics. Hamish Bond is current World Champion and has been unbeaten in around 40 international races throughout the world during the past three years.  Carl Meyer has also been a member of crews who have competed at Olympic Games (Beijing 2008) and World Championship level.
Rowing is not only about winning, it’s about fun and friendship, and competing. Sure, it’s demanding, but that simply means managing time. Time for fun, time for relaxation, time for study, and time for friendship.

Rugby

The school has one of the largest and oldest rugby clubs in New Zealand. In 1871 a school team played a University team which marked the first school game of rugby in the Province. Over recent years eleven sides have played each season with the 1st XV playing in the Highlanders 1st XV competition. Other teams are the 2nd XV, Colts, U16 Blues, U15 Blues, U15 Whites, U15 Golds, U14 Blues, U14 Whites, U14 Golds and an Under 13 Blue team. As well as the local competition games, the 1st and 2nd Fifteens play Interschool fixtures against Christchurch BHS, Christ’s College, Southland BHS and King’s HS; with the 1st XV also playing both Waitaki BHS and Timaru BHS. Each season the School provides a large number of representative players in the age grade Otago teams and recent old boys Richie McCaw, Byron Kelleher, Filipo Levi and Jason Kawau are further testimony to the good grounding the players receive and the heights they can reach. Above everything they all enjoyed their Rugby at OB’s.

Water Polo

Otago Boys’ plays in the secondary school competition at Moana Pool during the first and fourth terms. The benefit of having our own swimming pool for training has assisted with individual skills and team preparation.

Trapshooting

Practices Wednesdays at Waldronville and competes in numerous shoots and interschools. Approximately 20 boys take part from Year 9 to Year 13.

Sailing

The school operates four Sunburst yachts out of the Ravensbourne Boating Club. Some of the yachts are stored in the clubhouse, and some in two shipping containers. Three of the yachts are fiberglass and false floored and one a wooden side tank model. They are sponsored by the Lion Foundation, Cock & Bull, Works Infrastructure, MWH, and Macleod & Associates.

Snowboarding/Skiing

Both competitive and recreational skiing and snowboarding are available to students at OBHS.
The school enters the Otago-Southland inter-secondary school skiing and snowboarding races held annually, and has frequently qualified for the South Island championships.
Trips aimed at novices are run at Coronet Peak, Cardrona and Treble Cone each winter.

Squash

Three levels of Squash are offered at OB’s. Social Squash is provided through the local clubs and schools beginners competition on Friday nights. Interschools are played against most of our traditional rivals during the winter season and a number of school based teams compete in men’s interclubs through the Otago Squash Rackets Club.

Tennis

School teams compete in a variety of grades on Saturday mornings and afternoons and Wednesday after school. Coaching takes place during sports period on Tuesday at the school courts on Stuart Street. The tennis club has been very successful over recent years with the emphasis on youth development.

Triathlon

This sport is excellent for the student who wants an individual challenge in more than one activity. There are many events on the school calendar to test students of all ages.

Volleyball

Both social and competitive volleyball is available at the school. As well as the local schools’ competition, there is the opportunity to compete in a number of metropolitan and regional tournaments.

Rock Climbing

OBHS now have a professionally built boulder wall to complement our summer rock climbing club.

Theatre Sports

The school has both a senior and a junior playing squad. There are interschool fixtures with Christ’s College, Christchurch Boys’ HS, King’s HS and Timaru Boys’ HS. The talent pool is steadily growing and some very clever boys play improvised theatre games. It’s not easy to make it up on the spot and to be funny as well.

Cricket

Cricket opportunities at OBHS include Saturday competitions for all age groups, inter-schools for 1st, 2nd and Colts’ teams, and tournaments for Year 9 and Year 10 players.
In the 2007 season, the OBHS Colts’ team were joint NZ champions in the Community Trust tournament. The 1st XI has won the Gillette Cup three times. OBHS teams practise in the school nets and are supported by staff as coaches and managers.
